The balance sheet shows an individual's or company's financial position at a stated moment in time, the close of business on the date of the balance sheet.

It is customary to prepare an income statement and a balance sheet at the same time. This allows the net income or loss shown on the income statement for the prior period to be reflected on the balance as of that particular moment.
