Variable rate

Variable rate is an interest rate or dividend that changes on a periodic basis. These rates are often used for mortgages, and several other types of loans. The rate changes are normally relative to movement of an outside indicator, such as the prime interest rate.

Generally Variable rates have a predetermined floor and ceiling along which limit the movement in the rate.

Also see adjustable rate.
